Brompton Community Housing's On-site Social,
Education and Economic Development
In 1996, members of the local low-income community joined together with individuals who had served on boards of other non-profit organizations, to rehabilitate, operate and support the residents in a 214-unit apartment property, which had been foreclosed. They formed a community based development organization to acquire Brompton Square Apartments.
Inspired by the success and benevolence of other non-profits and their community support services, Brompton engaged Texas Inter-Faith Support Services (TIFSS) to provide social, educational and economic services that would enhance participants' lives. It developed The Good Neighbor Program. Over the next 10 years, it helped TIFSS find capital sufficient enough to begin to meet the huge demand for its services.
Today the Good Neighbor Program is serving 165 apartment communities, touching the lives of more than 50,000 community residents and is undertaking a significant expansion.
Brompton's affordable housing operations are designed to be self-sustaining, enabling it to return a significant portion of the annual subsidy back to the community through The Good Neighbor Program. Over 100 jobs have been created in the expansion of The Good Neighbor Program, while uplifting the lives of local residents through its 58 custom-designed programs. The tax and other public subsidies Brompton is entitled to are thereby returned to the community in many beneficial ways.
